These are indeed tough times. The increasing financial pressure on families shows no signs of easing. It really hits home when you go to fill up your car with petrol or when you get to the checkout at the supermarket after a weekly shop.

Simple transactions that never used to raise an eyebrow suddenly have us doing a double take! The VAT increase in the UK has seemingly put the brakes on what was already a very tentative recovery. Now with inflation continuing to rise there is more calls than ever to raise the interest rate from its all time low figure and try to cease the upward trend of the cost of everyday products.

For the average family who are now paying hundreds more a year across the board for food and utilities and with no hope of pay increases (in fact more the threat of job losses) the new Government's attempts to fix the UK ecomony which has already hit them in the pocket may now be about to deliver another hammer blow if mortgages start to rise.

The global econmic crisis has been blamed on debt, the banks, or the ease with which money has been lent in the form of personal finance, mortgages etc.

The truth is, borrowing money is nothing new. Only the technology has changed and the rules remain the same. There is nothing wrong with debt as long as it is sensbily obtained and managed. There are responsibilities on the side of both parties - the lender should make sure that the borrower's circumstances are suitable to maintain the debt and the borrower similarly should give careful thought to the long term committments that any borrowing may ensue.

Sound financial planning by way of budgeting your income and being totally aware of every penny that you spend each month is the simplist possible way of calculating what leeway you have to afford to borrow more. Once that has been confirmed, it may we be that by borrowing money to cover existing more expensive debts, you may well be better off in the long term
